Introducing SocialRank — a new idea from MindValleyLabs
September 28th, 2007 by Mike Reining Read more about ArticlesUPDATE: 30 new SocialRank sites launched
On October 1st we’re launching a new service called SocialRank. We’re really excited about this.
Here’s why.
SocialRank is a mathematical algorithm that measures the importance of blog posts. Think of it as something akin to Google’s Pagerank, but focused on blog postings rather than webpages.
Well, we don’t expect the math to really excite people. It’s what we can do with the math that really counts.
Using SocialRank, we’re able to identify the hottest blog posts in specific niches.
Looking for the top marketing stories today? We know what they are.
We can tell you which marketing stories you need to be reading today, which marketing blogs you should be paying attention too and which marketing bloggers are rising in their field or falling.
But it’s not just marketing we can do this for. We’re measuring data in a host of other popular blog categories — like gadgets, photography, parenting, PR, advertising, apple, Java programming, Flash, Biking, Celebrity Gossip and hundreds more.
We’re launching hundreds of niche sites, each around a specific topic, that will allow bloggers and their readers to quickly get a snapshot of the most relevant and important news in their favorite categories.
Pictures speak louder than words, so take a look at GadgetRoll.com below.
This is screenshot of the SocialRank-powered site devoted to gadget and technology blogs.
We keep the sites simple to allow you to rapidly find the info you seek. There are four main areas. Let’s start at the top.
1. Today’s Top 15 Gadget Blog Stories
The blue arrow on the left points to this. We tell you what are the most important gadget stories on the blogosphere today. We also show the comments the stories are getting, which other prominant blogger is covering the story and a thumbnail of any pics associated with the story.
2. Today’s Most Important Gadget Blogs
What you’ll see here are the gadget blogs that have experienced the biggest boost in SocialRank scores today. This section helps you discover lesser known bloggers who might not have a brand name like Engadget.com, but whom are doing a great job and gaining attention. When a blogger writes a few good posts and gains attention, their SocialRank scores go up. If they rise up enough, they end up on the hot list shown here.

Now lets look at the bottom half of the page:
3. Upcoming Stories
Noted by the blue arrow in the image below. This section lists 10 upcoming stories related to Gadgets. These are relatively new stories that may not have gained enough attention yet, but might be worth your time.
4. Related SocialRank Sites
This is a list of other SocialRank-powered sites that you might be interested in if you like Gadgets. For example, AppleFever.com, the SocialRank-powered site for all things about Apple products. Or SweetGaming.com, the site for video game related stories.

We’re launching 30 SocialRank powered sites on Oct 1.
In the meanwhile, you can visit SocialRank.com to learn more.
Would love to hear your feedback on this…

Good solution. All users will appreciate this.
This is very interesting concept I have to admit. There’s one thing I don’t really understand, why 30 different sites, instead of one portal? Something along the lines of consumerreview.com?
